Dr. Emin Yaşar Demirci's study entitled "Modernisation, Religion and Politics in Turkey: The Case of the Iskenderpaşa Community" is undoubtedly the most significant study so far on the Naqshbandi, and the Iskenderpaşa Community, which has played an important part in modern Turkish political and economic history since the 1980S, especially with the teachings of Sheikh Mehmed Zahid Kotku and his followers. Iskenderpaşa Community's teachings are not only remarkable in their most favorable attitude towards a market economy, but also in respect to its positive orientation towards a democractic and secular political system. Demirci's study of the Iskenderpaşa Community is the most valuable contribution to the analysis of the socio-economic and political transformations that have been taking place in Turkey since the 1980S, and the current political struggles between Turkey's old and new elites.
