Reinforced Concrete

New developments have taken place in the areas of reinforced concrete technology and earthquake engineering since the publishing previous edition of this book. New approaches have emerged as a result of research and observations made after recent earthquakes. Most of these developments and the new approaches have been incorporated in the new editions of Turkish reinforced concrete codes, i.e. TS-500 2000 revision and Turkish Seismic Code 1998 revision. These changes have been incorporated in the revised edition of the book. The manuscript presented here was compiled from the class notes used in our first course on reinforced concrete, CE481 (later changed to CE382) that I have been teaching since 1960. The emphasis is on basic principles and behavior of reinforced concrete. In this book references are made to the two international codes; (a) ACI-318 (American Concrete Institute) and (b) CEB Model Code (European Concrete Comm.). In the text, the requirements of the Turkish reinforced concrete code (TS-500 of the Turkish Standards Institute) relevant to the subject discussed are quoted and examples are solved using these requirements. In the text, international symbols and SI units have been used.
